Introduction to Class 10 Chapter 4 - Triangles (Ex 4C) Exercise 4.3

As compared to what was learnt in Class 9 about Triangles, we now delve into a deeper aspect of this chapter. Two Triangles are called similar when i) the corresponding angles are equal and ii) the corresponding sides are in the same ratio (proportions). When the angles of two triangles are the same, they are called equiangular Triangles, a term coined by Thales. This theorem came to be known as the Thales Theorem or the Basic Proportionality Theorem.  Several other important theorems have been elaborated on in this chapter. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • Theorem 1- When a line is drawn parallel to one side of the triangle to intersect the other two sides in distinct points, the other two sides are divided in the same ratio

  • Theorem 2- If a line divides any two sides in the same ratio, the line is then parallel to the third side

  • Theorem 5- If the angle of one triangle is equal to the angle of another triangle and the sides including the angles are proportional, then both the Triangles are similar (criteria for a similar triangle)

  • Theorem 8 (Pythagoras Theorem)- The square of the hypothesis is the sum of the squares of the other two sides of a right-angled triangle

All the above and the rest of the theorems have been explained through proofs and diagrams which have to be analyzed for better understanding by the students.
