Taeniasis

Taeniasis is a disease caused by parasites. Parasites are mostly microorganisms which live off another living being. There are parasites present in our gut and intestines, and these can cause infections such as taeniasis. Taeniasis disease is so named because we owe this infection to the tapeworms present in our organs which fall under the genus Taenia. The two species of tapeworms which are most widely responsible for the taeniasis disease are the pork tapeworm, also known as Taenia solium and the beef tapeworm known as Taenia saginata. Information regarding the taeniasis disease, causes of taeniasis, taeniasis symptoms, taeniasis treatment and the prevention of taeniasis is very crucial to counter this infection.

Taeniasis Symptoms

Taeniasis symptoms are an essential piece of knowledge when it comes to the proper diagnosis of the disease. The significant taeniasis symptoms are as follows:

  • Severe diarrhoea

  • Stomach ache

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Pain in the abdomen, and

  • Digestive problems

Sometimes these symptoms, when prolonged over some time, can become worse and give rise to nausea, sleeplessness, pain in the appendices, anaemia, cysticercosis and even blockage of the intestines. In this state, taeniasis treatment is crucial to avoid fatalities.

If one notices any of these with increasing severity, the person must suspect these as taeniasis symptoms and go for immediate testing.

Taeniasis Diagnosis

Doctors detect taeniasis through a series of tests such as blood count test, urine test, general physical check-up and stool test to determine the number of tapeworm eggs in the system.

Taeniasis Causes & Risks

Taeniasis is mainly a result of poor hygiene and consumption of improperly stored food. Taeniasis is more prevalent in the regions where pork and beef are a significant part of the people's diet. It is also rampant among the poor because they do not have access to proper sanitation facilities. In these areas, development is crucial to avoid the fast spread of fatal infections like taeniasis.

Regions, where this disease is commonly prevalent, are parts of Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Africa and Latin America.

People who frequently travel to these areas are also at risk of contracting this disease.

Taeniasis Treatment

Taeniasis treatment may involve lengthy and tedious periods of medication to completely eradicate the worm as well as its eggs from the system. Two drugs heavily used in this respect are Niclosamide and praziquantel.

Prevention of Taeniasis

The prevention of taeniasis involves several steps which are simple yet critical to keep this disease at bay. The most useful guidelines are:

  1. Always consume clean and freshly bought meat

  2. Maintain proper personal hygiene

  3. Keep your surroundings clean regularly

  4. Have water from sanitized and trusted sources

  5. Only consume food cooked at high temperatures, especially when it comes to meat

A meat survey system in the States overlooks the quality of meat to avoid the spread of such a disease.

Solved Examples

  1. What Is Taeniasis?

Ans: Taeniasis is a disease occurring in the intestines of humans due to the growth and infestation of parasites. These parasites usually enter as foreign bodies and then begin reproduction inside our gut, while feeding on our nutrients. Taeniasis got its name due to the parasites which cause it, namely the tapeworms of the genus Taenia. There are several taenia symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach upset, and weight loss and we have proper taeniasis treatment procedures in place as well.

  1. What Are The Steps of Prevention of Taeniasis?

Ans: You can prevent taeniasis by keeping in mind some simple tips regarding prevention of taeniasis. Taeniasis disease is kept at bay by following these simple guidelines:

  1. Wash your hands regularly

  2. Keep utensils and cutlery clean.

  3. Maintain basic daily hygiene

  4. Check all non-vegetarian products for freshness and proper preservation before consumption.

  5. Have properly cooked food

Fun Facts

  • Among the three critical tapeworms Taenia solium, Taenia saginata and Taenia asiatica, only T. solium causes significant health issues.

  • Taeniasis infects humans when they ingest the larval cysts of parasites present in undercooked or stale meat.

  • Humans who carry tapeworms in their gut eject tapeworm eggs in their faeces and infect the environment when they defecate in the open.

  • Taeniasis disease can infect humans through oral or anal routes due to poor hygiene and contaminated water.

  • The larvae of these disease-causing tapeworms can grow on any organ inside the body, and when they enter the nervous system, they cause neurological disorders such as epilepsy.

FAQs on Taeniasis

1. How does a tapeworm obtain nutrients?

Ans: Some tapeworms live naturally inside our gut, and they are completely harmless for humans. These tapeworms in the intestines even help during digestion. However, these creatures cannot survive on their own and necessarily require a host body to carry on its life functions. A tapeworm doesn't have a fully functioning digestive system; therefore, it borrows food from the body that it lives on. Tapeworms suck digested food from their host, and consequently, we mostly find them living in the intestines of animals where food gets primarily digested. These microorganisms wear their 'stomach' outside their bodies, as they have to take in food from the environment. Tapeworms, thus, obtain nutrients from the collection of their host.

2. Are tapeworms fatal?

Ans: Tapeworms are a part of our body. Many of them live in our intestines right from the time of our birth. Some of these are also essential for gut health. However, certain tapeworms can end up being fatal, and these are the ones which we acquire from outside. Tapeworms enter the human system through a couple of ways, one being through stale and spoilt meat. Another method for these to come is directly through oral or anal routes due to interaction with contaminated water. One can acquire tapeworms even because of bad hygiene. These tapeworms, present in unhygienic environments which enter our system accidentally can end up being fatal.
