Summary of the Chapter

The story “Thapp Roti Thapp Dal” is written by Rekha Jain. This is a poetry based skit, where every character has been portrayed in a funny way.

According to the skit, as the curtains are up, the kids are seen playing with each other. They are very excited. Suddenly, Munni comes running calling out Neena’s name and asks her to play a household game (Roti ka Khel). Munni tells Neena that she has brought whatever is needed to play the game, from her mother. Neena agrees and brings in the other kids, like Chunnu, Tinku, Sarla and Tarla too.

The kids divide the duties amongst themselves. Chunnu and Tinku get the duties of buying vegetables from the market and cooking dal (lentils). Sarla gets the duty of making mattha (a type of sweet). Tarla and Munni made Rotis. The girls, while making rotis, sang a song “Thapp Roti Thapp Daal, khaane wale ho tayyar.” (We are giving you roti and dal, hungry people get ready). Hearing this, the other kids sit down in a line and sing, “Lao roti Lao daal, Lao khub uuraye maal.” (Bring us roti bring us dal, we will eat a lot) Munni and Tarla, while serving food to the girls, sing, “ Le lo roti le lo daal, chakh kar humein batao haal” (Take roti take daal, eat and tell us how it is)

After eating all the food, the kids act like they are sleeping. They eat half the food they made and they save the other half. Suddenly, they hear the purr of a cat. The cat sees everywhere, and exclaims happily, “Oho! Makkhan Kitna Sara, jhat se chatkar karu kinara” (Wow! There’s so much butter, I’ll have this all immediately)

He advances forward and jumps high, and acts like he’s taking roti and butter from the shelf. He eats the roti and runs away. At that moment, Sarla wakes up and sees the container of butter and sweets empty. She shouts, “ Arrey o Chunnu, Tinku bhai, kahan hai makkhan aur malai?” (O Chunnu and Tinku brother, where did the butter and cream go?) Hearing Sarla, Chunnu cries and exclaims, “Naa makkhan naa malai, lagta hai billi ne khaai.” (No butter and cream are left, it seems the cat has had it all.)

Immediately, they search for the cat. They act like they are searching everywhere. At that moment, Sarla and Tarla cry out, “Yeh lo! Mil gayi billi, Mil gayi chor!” (Here it is! Got the cat, got the thief!)

They act like they are beating the cat and ask him, “Bol! Ab khayegi meri roti? Ab khayegi meri daal?” (Say! Will you have roti and dal again?)

The cat says, if they sleep again with their legs spread wide, he will have their food again. Saying this, the cat runs away. The kids run after him, and the curtain closes.
