1. Why is urban administration important?
Class 6 Social Science,Urban administration is very important. It is also known as municipal governance that takes care of all the duties to make the people living in urban areas comfortable. It administers big cities by providing basic amenities like water supply, street lights, keeping the streets and the markets clean, garbage collection, collecting house tax and water taxes, etc. They are also responsible for cleaning the drainage system in cities and maintaining the parks and markets.
2. How are urban areas managed?
According to the size of the town, urban local governments are established. A municipality is constituted for a small urban area which is responsible for the development of that town. Urban areas are divided into different wards. For every ward, ward councillors get elected by the people of that area through elections. For example, where a park or a new hospital should be built are usually decided by the ward councillors.
3. What are the functions of the chief executive officer in a municipal corporation?
He is also known as the municipal commissioner who is appointed by the state government. The chief executive officer acts as a link between the Municipal Corporation and state government. Various officers who are in charge of different departments like health, education, engineering and sanitation help the municipal commissioner in his/her work. He is the head of the executive branch of the municipal corporation and has all the executive powers. He also has the power to appoint employees of lower level.
4. Critically evaluate the role of the Ward Councillors.
Urban areas are divided into wards in which a ward councillor is elected directly, to represent and serve the people in that specific ward. The councillor’s duty is to represent the interests of the people in that ward. They should know the main issues faced by the people in their ward and solve them. They are the mediators or the link between the council and the voters. They are the spokespersons for the people of their ward.
5. Who looks into the elections of the Municipalities?
Indian Constitution has vested the power in the hands of the State Election Commission to supervise, direct and control the preparation of electoral rolls and conduct of all the elections to the Municipalities. People who have attained the age of 18 years can participate in the elections of municipalities and cast their votes and choose the candidate they wish. But the candidate who will contest in the election should at least be 21 years old.
