A. Very Short Answer Questions – 1 Mark


1. Word – Meaning from the given chapter

2. Fill in the blanks-

(i) Mridu didn’t have much time to wonder about whose slippers they were, because Ravi dragged her to the backyard, behind a ______.

Ans: Thick bitter-berry bush

(ii) “People are always telling us to be kind to animals, but when we are, they scream ______,” said Ravi.

Ans: ‘Ooh, don’t bring that dirty creature here!’

Ans: Mridu saw a pair of large black slippers beside her slippers. The large black slippers had marks of toes on them.

Ans: Ravi has a pet kitten in his backyard, who lives in a sand-filled torn football.


5. Where did Ravi find the kitten?

Ans: The kitten was found mewing one morning outside Ravi's gate.


B. Short Answer Questions – 2 Marks


1. Who feeds the kitten and how?

Ans: Ravi feeds the kitten. He gets the milk in a glass and if someone catches him feeding the kitten, he drinks most of it. He gives out milk to the kitten in a coconut shell.


2. What was the kitten's name? Whose descendant was he?

Ans: The kitten’s name was Mahendran. Ravi named him and also claimed that the kitten was a descendant of the Mahabalipuram Rishi-Cat.


3. Why did the kitten get alarmed?

Ans: The cat got alarmed and frightened and sharpened his claws on the edge of the coconut shell because he heard a “Kreech” sound from the window and got scared.


4. What was the Kreeching sound? What does it resemble?

Ans: Whenever Lalli learned to play the violin, the Kreeching sound was made. The sound resembled a derailing train.


5. What was Lalli doing when Mridu crept up to the window?

Ans: When Mridu crept up to the window, Lalli was sitting at a little distance and was awkwardly holding her violin. She held the bowstring and her elbows were jutting out. Her eyes were also filled with concentration.


C. Short Answer Questions – 3 Marks


1. What does Ravi say about people who do not like animals?

Ans: Ravi says to Meena that people always tell other people to be kind to animals and when we do that, they tell us that the animals are unhygienic and dirty and that we should leave them outside. He struggled to keep the kitten in his house because Paati didn’t like animals.


2. Why did Ravi name the kitten Mahendran?

Ans: Ravi named the kitten M.P. Poonai, i.e. Mahendravarma Pallavi Poonai. Mahendran's breed was a fine one and his fur resembled that of a lion's mane. Also, the emblem of the ancient Pallava King belonged to the ancestor that resembled Mahendran.


3. What did the kitten do when he heard the sound of a violin?

Ans: The kitten got alarmed and started sharpening his claws on the edge of the coconut shell when he heard the sound of the violin. He got scared and his hair stood straight. He jumped and rushed towards the bamboo tray of red chillies and hid under it and howled “Miaaaw!” 


4. Who showed up every day at Ravi’s house for a week?

Ans: A beggar used to show up at Ravi's house every day. He did so because he had been fed food by the ladies of Ravi's house for a week. The ladies let the beggar rest under the neem tree and gave him food.


 5. Write six lines from the poem “The Rebel”.

Ans: “When everybody has short hair,

The rebel lets his hair grow long.

When everybody has long hair,

The rebel cuts his hair short.

When everybody talks during the lesson,

The rebel doesn't say a word.”


D. Long Answer Questions – 5 Marks


1. Describe the person that was sitting with Lalli.

Ans: The person sitting with Lalli was her music teacher. He was almost bald but had a fringe of black hair that fell around his ears. He wore a tuft which was old fashioned. He wore a gleaming gold chain around his neck and a glittery diamond ring on his hand. He had big toes and was beating on the floor with them as his large foot was sneaking out from his gold-bordered vesti.


2. What did the beggar tell Ravi when he asked him to leave?

Ans: A beggar used to show up at Ravi's house every day for a week. He used to enter the house, sit in the garden and rest under the neem tree by leaning against its trunk. He used to make himself at home. He did all this at Ravi’s house because the ladies of the house were very generous. They used to feed him food and let him rest under the neem tree. The beggar told Ravi that it was because of the ladies that he was able to survive the week and keep his body and soul together.


3. Does the beggar leave? What does he ask for from the children?

Ans: Yes the beggar did leave. But before leaving he asked the children if he could rest under the tree until the sun was out and it was hot outside as his feet were already blistered. He also showed them the blisters that he had on the sole of his bare feet. He had large pink peeling blisters. On seeing this, Mridu thought that he did not have any money to buy the slippers. That is why the beggar had asked them for an old pair of slippers.


4. Did the children find the slippers for him? What do they do with it?

Ans: Yes, the children looked for a while and found the slippers for the beggar. Mridu remembered the odd-looking chappals that she saw on the doorstep while entering the house. The children thought that those slippers would fit the beggar fine and thus Ravi picked them up and gave them to the beggar and then he also asked the beggar to never come back.


5. Whose chappals were they? What happened next?

Ans: The chappals that were given to the beggar by the children belonged to the music master. When the master came out and didn’t find his chappals there, he called Lalli and asked her if she had seen his chappals. Ravi, Mridu and Meena told that they gave the master’s chappals to the old beggar. The children got scolded by Rukku Manni and Paati. Afterwards, they gave Ravi's mama’s chappals to the music master and he left. Then the family members wondered about what they would do when Mama would ask for his chappals later.
