Study Important Questions for Class 7 Science Chapter 11 - Light

Very Short Answer Questions: (1 Marks)

1. Light travels in a _________________ line.

Ans: Straight

2. Direction of light can be changed by ___________________.

Ans: Reflection

3. Concave mirror is an example of a ______________mirror.

Ans: Spherical

4. A _______________ can be used to split light into 7 colours.

Ans: Prism

5. __________________ Image can be obtained on a screen.

Ans: Real

Short Answer Questions: (3 Marks)

6. Differentiate between a real image and a virtual image.

Ans: Difference between a real image and a virtual image is as follows:

Real Image

Virtual Image

The image which can be obtained on screen is called a real image.

The image which cannot be obtained on screen is called virtual image

It is always inverted.

It is always erect.

Light rays actually converge at a point to form an image on screen.

Light rays appear to converge.

It is formed by a concave mirror and convex lens.

It is formed by a plane mirror and concave lens.

7. Explain Newton Disc.

Ans: The Newton disc was invented by Isaac Newton. It is a spherical disc containing 7 segments. Each segment corresponds to one colour in the rainbow. Thus, the seven colours present in the Newton disc are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. When the disc is rotated the colours start to fade to form a single white colour. Newton, thus demonstrated that white light is a combination of 7 different colours found in the rainbow with the help of Newton disc.

8. Explain how a concave mirror can be used to burn a piece of paper.

Ans: Concave mirror is also known as converging mirror. When the sunlight passes through the concave mirror and reaches the paper it forms a sharp focus. The paper and the mirror are held in the position for some time and slowly the paper starts burning at the point of focus. It is due to convergence of all the light/heat energy at one point. This is how a concave mirror is used to burn a piece of paper.

9. Differentiate between Concave and Convex Lenses.

Ans: Difference between Concave and Convex Lenses are as follows:

Concave Lens

Convex Lens

This type of lens is thin in the middle and thicker at the edges.

This type of lens is thicker at the centre and thinner at the edges.

It is also known as a diverging lens.

It is also known as converging lens.

It does not have a real focus.

It has a real focus.

It is used to correct Myopia.

It is used to correct hyperopia.

10. Demonstrate that Light Travels in a Straight Line.

Ans: Stepwise process to demonstrate that light moves in a straight line:

i. Light a candle.

ii. See the burning candle through a straight pipe.

iii. Second time, view the burning candle through a bent pipe.

Result: The first time you viewed the candle through a straight pipe light reached your eyes whereas in the second attempt you could not see the light.

Long Answer Questions: (5 Marks)

11. Explain the Formation of a Rainbow.

Ans: A rainbow is a spectrum of light consisting of seven different colours. We usually see a rainbow after rainfall. It is formed when the sunlight falls on the water droplets present in the sky after rainfall. The raindrops act as a prism and split the sunlight in seven different colours i.e. violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. Formation of the rainbow involves reflection, refraction and dispersion of light.

12. List a Few Uses of Spherical Mirrors.

Ans: Spherical mirrors are of two types: i) Concave Mirror, ii) Convex Mirror.

Uses of Concave Mirror:

i. It is used in solar cookers.

ii. It is used by dentists.

iii. It is used in torches, head light of vehicles as reflector.

iv. It is used as shaving mirrors to see enlarged faces.

Uses of Convex Mirror:

i. It is used as a rear view mirror in vehicles.

ii. It is also used in security mirrors at any place.

3. What is light?

The term light can be defined as the form of energy or radiation that can be detected by the human eye. Light travels from one point to the other point in a straight line. Hence, the path of light is always straight. Light helps us see things around us. It also helps living organisms to carry out the biological processes that are necessary for growth and development. This form of energy can also be extracted from the sun in the form of solar energy for domestic purposes.

4. What are the characteristics of light?

The characteristics of light are as follows -

  • Light always travels in a straight line. One can't see light if the path is blocked by opaque objects.

  • The direction and speed of light can be changed through refraction.

  • Light travels faster in water and slower in glass.

  • Light is a form of a transverse wave that can travel through different mediums, even in a vacuum.

  • It reflects after colliding from polished surfaces such as mirrors or metal surfaces.

5. How can we change the direction of light?

We can change the direction of light by different phenomena.

  • Reflection - In this phenomenon, light bounces back when it falls on a shiny surface. We can see images in water or mirror through the process of reflection.

  • Refraction - It can be defined as the bending of light when it passes from one medium to another medium.

  • Dispersion - It is a natural phenomenon in which light splits into seven different colours due to a change in the speed of light.
