The disc jockeys (Dj full form) often use several dj mixtures and small audio mixtures that come with small crossfader and cue functions that allow the transition of one music track to another. The specialised dj mixtures also enables the jockey to pre-listen to the recorded source of the music that can be adjusted to mix in the track which is being played so that the sound doesn't occur out of rhythm. These days digital jockeys (DJ full form of dj music) uses the dj software with the dj controller to mix tracks and save it on the playlist of the laptop instead of playing it on a console mixture.

History of Dj

The term “disk jockey” which is dj full form of dj music, was first coined by Walter Winchell who was a radio gossip commenter in 1935 that followed with the appearance in the print media in 1941 in a famous magazine named Variety magazine. Back in that time, this acronym was used to describe the radio personalities who were associated with airing phonograph records on radio.in late 19th century, the wave of playing recorded music for home parties rose with the mass marketing of the phonograph recorders. But only in 1943 the first ever dance party was organised by a british disc jockey named Jimmy Savile using only a single turntable with a marketshift sound system.four years later the british disc jockey started using two turntable welded together to function as a single DJ console. In the late 1960s, a man named Rudy Bozak started producing the first DJ mixers with mixing dj consoles that specialized in DJing.

In late 1960s to early 1970s, two men name King Tubby and Lee Perry who were the producer and the system operator and DJ of the jamican sound system culture first came up with a genre of music that is famously known as dub music these days.just because of their inclination for the repetitive rhythmic structures that are stripped of their harmonic elements, sonically manipulative musical material from pre-recorded tracks from mass media and electronically manipulated spatiality, the influence of jamican music has had and still continues to play a major influence on the American hip hop culture. In the 1980s a japanese music company first came up with an analog rhythm drum machine named TR-808 that was capable of producing several artificial sounds like that of a booming bass and sharp snares with a metronome-like rhythm. When the yellow magic orchestra used this instrument, it gave rise to hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa in late 1980s as the result of the influence of TR-808. Since that it has been the centre of attraction and widely adopted by various hip-hop DJs. In 1982, the first compact CD was introduced to the world of music. In 1998, Eiger labs MPman F10 was the first MP3 digital audio player that was introduced. In January of the same year, the first digital DJ system known as N2IT demonstrated final scratch in a BeOS development that can actually support the MP3 files through its special time coded vinyl recorders and CD players. It became a huge revolution in the world of DJing. The musical system manufacturers then started moving towards collaboration with the computer DJing pioneers to offer professional endorsement. It first began with professor Jam who was known as William P. Rader who developed the world’s first dedicated DJ computer conversion along with its learning program which was then taken up in the CPS DJ summit to spread the words about the advantage of this system to the world. Then in the 2000s, the computers and laptops became more powerful with high speed processor units, compact and affordable. With this there was DJ softwares, specialized DJ sound cards as well as DJ controllers were developed that can be installed and used on laptops as a source of new music rather than just turntables and CDJs. in 2001, for the first time in the world  the pioneer of DJ music, starting producing CDJs with over 1000 CD player to make the digital recordings compatible with the traditional DJing techniques.

Role of DJ

Originally the word disc jockey (DJ long form) was first introduced for the phonographic records but later the term Disc jockey or famously known as Digital jockey (DJ full form of DJ music) is referred to a person who mix and match various recorded musical soundtracks from various sources such as vinyl recorder, CDs, cassettes or digital audio files that are stored either in the memory card of the laptop as playlist or in USB stick.  The role of a DJ is to perform live in a nightclub or any party that involves mass gathering, or for the TV or radio broadcast audiences or for an online radio audience. DJs are also responsible for creating mixes and remixes of two or more pre-recorded soundtracks in a seamless transition so as their rhythm and tempo remains uneven that can be sold or commercially distributed later. Every professional DJ is specialised in a certain specific genre of music like hip-hop, tecno, house, rapping etc. The DJs have extensive knowledge about the world over music and its evaluation in the genre they are specialised in.

Types

There are various categories of disc jockeys (dj expansion) depending on their workplace:-

  • Radio Jockey : they are generally known as radio personalities who are responsible for designing an entire talk show along with playing of certain genre or mixed genre of music from the set playlist done by the radio station before the show. They are mostly responsible for an interactive and interesting format creation that engages the radio audiences to stick to the end of the show that in turn raises the popularity of a certain radio station. These are broadcasted on FM, AM and online radio these days.

  • Club Disc Jockey (DJ Party Meaning) : they are the most well known DJ who mostly play grooving tracks either as the original music tracks or by mixing and remixing the pre-recorded musics in a smooth transition keeping their rhythm and tempo in place and making it interesting and attractive to hear. They mostly play in nightclubs, pubs or bars for a large ground to keep them on their feet for night long. Thus they generally prefer to play peppy dance numbers in general.

  • Mobile DJ : They are often seen playing such music on occasions like musical nights of big fat weddings or prom nights of high schools and colleges. They use portable sound systems and pre-recorded music to play at the events. Usually their own sound system comprises their own laptops with the DJ software installed, mics, DJ decks and speakers that they carry around everywhere they go for an event or functions.

Equipments

There are several types of equipment that a disc jockey owns to be on the top of their game and for a professional touch to the music they play. Some of them are discussed below.

  • CD players : these are usually high quality digital media players that are specially designed for DJing. They are often recognized by large jog wheels with mounted pitch controllers to allow Djs to manipulate the soundtracks in digital files for beat matching similar to how DJs used turntables for the vinyl recorders. They also have special features like waveform and loops as in DJ softwares.

  • DJ Mixers : DJ mixers are small forms of actual mixing consoles that can be found in a recording studio with sound engineers or the soundtrack producers. Usually DJ mixers have only two channels which otherwise with standard live sound mixtures with sound engineers in small venues have 12 to 24 channels and with even bigger and renowned studios the count of the channels goes upto 72. The DJ sound mixtures have many such similar features that are found on large sound mixtures. But there is one special feature that is limited to BJ mixture and that is a crossfader. A crossfader allows the DJ to mix two or more tracks together with the midpoint of the crossfader travel upto 50/50 mix of the two channels and it is usually horizontally mounted on the mixture.

  • Headphones : DJs have usually high end headphones that are specially designed to allow the DJ to acoustically isolate the music beats with the outside noise, have a flexible headband with pivot joints so that it allows the DJ to listen through one headphone will turn the other away  and replaceable cables. These are very seldomly available to the commercial consumers of the music.

  • Software : with the advancement of the technology, special softwares are developed for processing of the soundtracks and the music and easy storage of large and numerous music files in the laptops that has eradicated the need to carry turntables, CDs or vinyl records to the gig. This is not like a normal music player software that is available for the commercial consumers. DJ software has the ability to play two soundtracks at one point of time simultaneously and also display waveforms of the files on the screens. This helps the DJ to know about the next music file that is about to play and how the sounds of various following soundtracks are aligned.

DJ Controller : DJ softwares is generally used to mix the two tracks together simultaneously without using separate hardware like DJ mixture.
