'Radioactivity' is the twelfth chapter in the SELINA Physics textbooks for Class 10 ICSE board students. In this era, for the benefit of our generation, Radiation is used in many fields. For example, in the field of medicine, it's time and again proven to be a boon to us. Where 40 years ago, we were losing numerous lives to cancer, the percentage now has become lesser. The survival rate has improved from 48% to an enthralling 71%. Radiation has not only helped us in the field of medicine but also academically to prove many science experiments, several industries and most importantly in Nuclear Power Plants for generating electricity.

Students in this chapter will also learn about atoms which have a central part known as the nucleus which consists of the protons and neutrons. The protons and positively charged entities whereas the neutrons are neutral particles. In addition to these two, there's a particle which is known as an electron. It is a negatively charged particle.

Some of these Electrons are located very close to the nucleus and are thus known as bound electrons. Now, you may ask why

Students may have learned in their earlier classes that positive and negative charges attract each other. And what do we have inside of the nucleus? Bingo! The proton. These protons and electrons are highly attracted to each other thus, the electron revolves around the nucleus in an orbit.

Now, other electrons revolving in an orbit located further away from the nucleus are weakly attracted to it. In other words, they are loosely bound electrons and hence are called free electrons.

Solving the questions

Let’s suppose that you read a book of about 200 pages. In the end, you can’t remember every word of it. Neither is that logical. But when you will start solving questions, you will start remembering what you read. Whether it’s from the 5th page or the 50th page. Solving questions improves your logical assessment skills as well as your thinking capabilities. Only reading is never enough, practicality is the most important aspect of studying. This is where students lack the most. The only theory does not help you crack exams.

Improving Physics

There is only one solution to this which is practising more and more questions. In the first 3 days, you will feel as if it’s the most difficult thing in the entire world. But on the 4th day, you will start seeing a pattern. A pattern in which the questions are asked to you. Slowly, you will start thinking about how it should be solved and in a matter of time, you will be able to solve them with ease. Of course, this takes hard work but remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day either. Practice questions daily. Even if there’s a day when you feel like not doing anything, practise at least 5 questions. Consistency is the key to success.

Advantages of referring to  Selina textbooks for the ICSE Board

These books are very comprehensive. Every concept is explained in a well-detailed manner.
