What is a Percentage Calculator?

Percentage is the number that denotes the fractional part out of 100. A percent literally means per hundred. Hence 89% means 89100.  Similarly, we can represent the denominator of 100 with decimals by moving the decimal point by two places.  Accordingly,  89 1100= 0.89.  Therefore, 89%  = 0.89 = 89100. A percentage calculator, also known as percentage converter, is a free online tool that makes your calculation easy and displays the result in a few seconds.

For example: 1% of  1000 chocolate equals to 1000 1100 = 10 chocolates

How To Find Percentages?

To calculate the number corresponding to the  percentage of a given number, say 20% of 40, simply perform multiplication. For example, 20100 40 = 8.

To convert fraction into percentage, first divide the numerator by denominator and then multiply the result in decimal by 100. For example,  5/4 = 1.25 100 = 125%.

To convert a given percentage into decimal, divide by 100. For example,  20%  is 20100= 0.2

Percentage Calculation Formula

In order to calculate the percentage, we should know the percentage calculation formula. The percentage formula is the ratio of actual value to the total value and multiply the result by 100.

Hence, the percentage formula is expressed as:

Percentage (%) = Actual ValueTotal Value 100

Let us learn how to find percentage with the help of the example given below:

Example:

There are 120 students in a class. Out of them, 60 are boys. Find the percentage of boys in class.

Solution:

Total number of students = 120

Boys in the class = 60

% of boys in class = 60120 100 = 50%

Therefore, 50% of boys are in class.

How to Calculate what Percentage of a Number is of Another Number?

How to Calculate Marks in Percentage?

To calculate the percentage of marks, divide the marks obtained in the examination by the maximum marks and multiply the result with 100.

For example: If a student has scored 85 out of 100 in Mathematics,  65 out of 100 in Physics, 75 out of 100 in Chemistry, the total marks secured by the student is (85 + 65 + 75)  =  225 out of ( 100 + 100 + 100) = 300.

Therefore, percentage of marks obtained by the student is 225300 100 = 75%.

Percentage of Marks Formula

The percentage of marks can also be calculated easily by using the following formula:

Marks Percentage:  Marks Obtained Total Maximum  Marks 100

FAQs on Percentage Calculator

1. What does percentage mean?

The term percentage is derived from the Latium Per centum meaning “out of one hundred. In other words, percentage is a ratio expressed with respect to 100.

2. What is the percentage increase?

A percentage increase is basically the amount that increases relative to its original value expressed in percentage. For example, if the price of something changes from $ 100 to $ 110, the price here has increased by $ 10. So, to find the percentage change, we just need to compare this $ 10 change with its original value i.e. $ 100. To calculate the percentage increase, we need to find the ratio of the amount changed $ 10 with its original value $ 100.  Here, the ratio will be $ 10 /$ 100 = 0.1. If we want to convert this into percentage, simply we  will multiply 0.1 by 100 which gives 10%.

3. What are the different applications of percentage?

Percentages are widely used in daily life. Some of the real -life example of percentage are as follows:

  • Percentage helps us to know exactly what amount or figure one is talking about. For example, if Hitesh is spending 50% of his salary, it implies that Hitesh is spending Rs. 50 for every Rs. 100 he has been earning.

  • Percentage helps us to compare two fractional values.

  • The calculation of percentage increase or percentage decrease is important in analysing or comparing two performances and progress. For instance, let’s say Hitesh scored a total of 310 out of 500 in his mid-term exams. Whereas he scored 430 out of 500 in his final exams. Clearly, we can see the marks scored in the finals are higher than those scored in the mid-term exams. Hence, we can say there is progress in the exam with the base value of 500.
