FAQs on NCERT Solutions Class 11 English Woven Words Prose Chapter 1 The Lament

Q1. What is the Plot of the Story in Class 11 English Woven Words Chapter 1 Prose?

Ans: CBSE English Class 11 Woven Words Prose Chapter 1 The Lament is a story about a father suffering in the agony of his dead son. The story narrates how Iona, a sleigh-driver, is desperately looking to vent his grief over his lost son to someone. These people include two turns of passengers, the first being a military officer and the second a group of three young men.

Neither of them cared to pay heed to Iona’s story and behave poorly with him instead. His third and last potential listener was a cabman who, he realised, had fallen asleep in the course of his story. Not getting anyone else to sympathise with him, in the end, Iona seeks refuge by sharing his story with his horse who apparently is his only listener.

Q2. What is the Role of Horse in The Lament?

Ans: The horse in The Lament is a symbol of kindness and friendship. The text illustrates the acute indifference and apathy prevalent among human beings. Each person is self-centric and lacks the basic human emotions of understanding and compassion towards others. Iona, in the story, is in desperate need of consolation and a shoulder to cry on.

But nobody from among the officer, the three unruly men, and the cab driver care to lend him a listening ear. Disappointed in the crowd of passers-by, Iona ultimately has to resort to the company of his horse. The animal is the only living being that seems to listen to his story uncomplainingly, finally letting Iona relieve himself from his suppressed emotions.

Q3. What Impression of the Character of Lona Do You Get from NCERT Solutions Class 11 English Woven Words Chapter 1 Prose?

Ans: In Chapter 1 of CBSE Class 11 English Woven Words Prose, Iona is portrayed as a conventional old man mourning the loss of his young son. Grief and solitude have reduced his existence to almost an illusion. He mourned his loss to the extent that he craved to share it with just anyone, no matter if they were strangers.

In the absence of any such person, his sadness took over his sense of his surroundings, and he is seen driving his sledge recklessly. His appearance is suggestive of a deeply disturbed and helpless person at the core who finds his release only after pouring his heart out to his horse.

Q4. What is the description of the horse in the story?

Ans: The horse is white in colour. His body is lean, and he has wooden legs. The horse has a great appearance. He was the best companion for Lona Potapav, who was a cab driver. When there was no one to listen to his grief, the only companion to talk to was his horse.

Q5. What was the grief of Lona?

Ans: Lona, the cab driver, had lost his son a few weeks ago, and one can understand the pain of losing someone. The grief of losing a son is not easy for anyone, and neither can it be reduced. However, one feels a little better when someone listens to their pain. Lona tried to share it with almost everyone whom he met, but no one was interested as everyone was busy with their work or tired. Finally, he shared it with his companion, the horse.

Q6. What can be concluded from Chapter 1 Class 11 English?

Ans: From Chapter 1 of English Class 11, we have concluded that the world is so modern and the people are so busy that no one has time for other’s emotions or to understand one’s sorrow. The contribution of the cultural values of human beings to society is only technical. The concept of what we call society has been altered compared to earlier times. There is no sensitivity in people, and life has just become mechanical.

Q7. Who was the true companion for Lona?

Ans: The true companion for Lona was his horse. He tried to share his sorrow and grief of his lost son with others, but no one had time or patience to listen to him. They were either busy or hurrying to reach their destination. The sorrow was so deep that he was not aware of the surroundings and drove his sleigh very rashly. Finally, he shared his sorrows and sentiments with his horse.
