While studying at Christ Church College in Oxford, Brown got into some trouble with the dean. The name of the Dean was Dr John Fell. According to the stories, Dr Fell asked Thomas to complete a task otherwise he would be expelled from the college. While Thomas did manage to complete the task, he was agitated with the dean and hence wrote this poem which turned into a nursery rhyme for kids.
