Do you love animals and care for them? We should always help others, including animals. This is an interesting nursery rhyme where a man lives in a cabin deep in the woods. A rabbit comes by and knocks on the door to seek safety and shelter. The man shows sympathy and opens the door. They become good friends as the man saved the rabbit's life. Let us learn this rhyme and sing it.
Nursery rhymes with life lessons are composed to teach little kids virtues. These virtues in the form of proverbs and lessons will make them good human beings someday. For instance, the nursery rhyme In a Cabin in the Woods is about a man helping an innocent animal from the hands of a hunter. Let us find out what he did by reading the lyrics of this poem.
In a cabin in the woods
Little man by the window stood
Saw a rabbit hopping by
Knocking at his door
(Frightened as can be)
"Help me, help me, help," he said
Or the hunter will shoot me dead"
"Little rabbit, come inside,
Safely to abide."
Itty bitty cabin in the woods
Itty bitty man by the window stood
Saw a rabbit hopping by
Knocking at his door
(Frightened as can be)
"Help me, help me, help," he said
’fore the hunter shoots me dead"
"Come little rabbit, come with me
Happy we will be."
Great big cabin in the woods
Great big man by the window stood
Saw a rabbit hopping by
Knocking at his door
(Frightened as can be)
"Help me, help me, help," he said
Or the hunter will shoot me dead"
"Come little rabbit, come inside,
Safely you may hide."
A Small Cabin in the Woods
The first stanza explains that there is a small cabin deep in the woods. A little man lives there alone. No one is there in the surroundings except wild animals. One day, the man heard a knock on the door. He opened the door and found a frightened rabbit.
In the second stanza, the rabbit urged the little man to open the door and let him in. He asked for help as a hunter was chasing him. The hunter wanted to shoot him dead. When the man listened to what the rabbit said, he immediately opened the door and told the rabbit to come in.
In the next stanza, the same meaning of the lyrics is repeated but different words are used by the anonymous poet. This time, the poet explains the same. The rabbit entered the small cabin and stayed there safely. Even though the cabin was small, the small man was happy to let the rabbit in.
In the last stanza, the poet describes the cabin as great and did the same to describe the man. It seems the man was of great nature as he saved the rabbit’s life from the hunter.
The Little Man who Saved the Rabbit
The poem has immense significance in the education of little kids. It explains how a little man saved a rabbit from the hands of a vicious hunter. The hunter wanted to kill him with his gun and the rabbit had nowhere to run.
It was because of the great man the rabbit was saved that day. He welcomed the rabbit and asked him to take shelter. He also said that they will become good friends. This poem teaches kids to help others in need. It explains that it is our responsibility to be alongside those who are in distress. This is how we can be good friends and stand strong to take the test of time.
Parents can teach this rhyme by playing a game. One kid can be the man in the cabin. One can be the hunter and the rest can be the rabbit. Each will take turns to become a rabbit and enter the man’s house before the hunter catches him/her. Read and explain the Little Cabin in the Woods Game to the kids and make it easier for them to memorise.
