Accessory respiratory organ includes a system of air chambers. These chambers are formed from the outgrowths of the mouth or gill region. It occurs in those fishes that occasionally leave the water. Dense network of blood vessels in the skin lining of the fishes helps in the exchange of gases. Fishes such as labyrinth fish, snakeheads, or air-breathing catfish can survive outside the water for some considerable time. The swim bladder in the fishes may also serve as an accessory respiratory organ. Accessory organs can be of different types: suprabranchial organ, branchial outgrowth, pharyngeal Diverticula, Pneumatic sacs, buccopharyngeal epithelium, integument, gut epithelium and swim-bladder.
