Hint: Jaundice is a disease in which the level of bilirubin increases due to which the skin, whites of the eyes and mucous membrane becomes yellow. The bilirubin is secreted and processed in the liver.

Complete Answer:
In jaundice the bilirubin is not processed properly by the liver. This results in deposition of bilirubin in the tissues as the body is unable to get rid of it.

Major causes of jaundice are-
- The increase in the bilirubin can be due to excess red blood cell breakdown which can reduce the count of RBC. This condition of reduced RBC is called anaemia.
- Obstruction in the bile duct- Processing or breaking down the bilirubin by liver gets impaired. The blockage can also occur due to gallstones, cancer.
- Acute inflammation of liver/ disorder in hepato-biliary system- The inflammation occurs due to the deposition of bilirubin.
- The jaundice can also happen due to a genetic condition called the Gilbert’s syndrome, prolonged fasting, or due to thyroid disorder.

Thus the correct answer is (B).

Additional Information: The jaundice is more prevalent in newborn. Around 80% of the newborn suffer from jaundice in the first week after birth. It can be treated by phototherapy or transfusion.

Note: The jaundice is treated by treating the cause. In case of bile duct obstruction, surgery is required. Other cases can be treated by giving the proper medications. The most common symptoms of jaundice are itchiness, pale faeces, dark urine and yellowing of skin.
