Hint: The transformer can be described in the most easy ways as a thing that can control voltage by stepping up or stepping down. The transformer is a voltage control device. It is used in the distribution and transmission of alternating current (AC) power. It is also used for converting AC to DC and vice versa. Different types of transformers are used for different fundamental categories.

Complete step by step answer:
The transformer is a voltage control device that can step up or step down voltage and is generally used in transmission AC power.
The different types of transformers are:
1) Power transformer – in the field of transmission and distribution of electrical power the power transformer is generally used.
2) Autotransformers – this transformer is used for converting voltage within relatively low limits to connect power systems of voltages having different values, it also helps to start A.C motors.
3) Testing transformers- this transformer conducts the test at high and ultra-high voltage.
4) Power transformers – this transformer for special applications is used for Furnace, welding, etc.
5) Ratio transformers- in the field of Ratio engineering this type of transformer acts.
6) Transformer for feeding installations with static converters, ignitrons, semiconductor valves, etc. convert A.C into D.C (rectifying) and converting D.C into A.C (inverting).

Note:
Michael Faraday gave by discussing the concept of a transformer first in the year 1831. thereafter the idea was carried forward by other prominent scientific scholars. Though the basic purpose of using transformers was to control a balance between the electricity that occurred at very high voltages and consumption at very low voltages.
