The ear is the main organ of hearing and balance. It is divided into three parts-
- The external ear: It consists of the external muscular pinna and the auditory canal. It gathers sound and focuses on the eardrum.
- Middle ear: It consists of the eardrum or tympanum and ear ossicles (malleus, incus and stapes. It opens in the inner ear through an oval window. The gathered sound is converted into vibrations by the tympanum and is transmitted to the inner ear through ear ossicles.
- Inner ear: The oval window is the membranous opening between the middle and inner ear. Through the oval window, vibrations are conducted in the inner ear. It comprises the cochlea which is the main centre for processing vibrations and the semicircular canal which helps in maintaining the dynamic balance of the body.
