Hint: There are basically three states of matter which are known as solid, liquid or gas. Where matter can be defined as anything that occupies space and has some mass. These three states of matter can be distinguished on different basis.
Complete answer:
Solid are those substances which are rigid in nature, have fixed shape or volume and the molecules arranged in them are tightly packed with the help of strong intermolecular forces due to which it will not have a tendency to flow like liquids.
On the other hand liquids are those substances which have the property of fluidity and they have no fixed shape as they take the shape of that container in which it kept this is because the intermolecular forces between them is not so strong which held them tightly bound with each other due to this reason they have tendency to flow.
When a solid changes into liquid then that state is known by the name melting. Which can be explained by taking an example of ice cubes. If we keep the ice cubes at room temperature then it starts converting into water which we can say that it converts itself from solid state to liquid one or it starts melting. Hence we can say that change in state from a solid to a liquid is called Melting.
Note:
The point where any solid starts changing into liquid is known as melting point and rather doing this process we have to change the conditions like solid gets converted into liquid by increasing the temperature and heat is evolved during this process.
