Hint: Chordae tendineae are the fibrous structure which has a comb-like appearance. They are attached to the tricuspid and mitral valve. These valves prevent the blood from flowing back into the atria when ventricles undergo contraction.
Complete step by step answer: Chordae tendineae are cord-like structures found within the heart. They are attached to the atrioventricular valve-AV valves (also known as the Bicuspid valve on the left side of the heart and atrioventricular valve on the right side).
-On one side they're connected to the valve of the heart while on the opposite side they're connected to the papillary muscles while being present in the ventricles. They arise from fibrous epithelial tissue -When there is atrial systole the blood flows from atria to the ventricle because the pressure within the ventricle is low. At this point, chordae tendineae become relaxed and causes the Atrioventricular valves to be opened.
-Now during ventricular systole what will happen is the pressure within the blood will increase and blood will start ejecting out of the ventricles and the AV valve closes. During this time the chordae tendineae become tightened and prefer keeping Atrioventricular valves in the closed position.
-Since chordae tendineae pull the valves the prolapse and eversion of valves into the atria is stopped. Due to this reason, the blood doesn’t flow back into the atria during ventricular systole.
-The chordae tendineae performs a very important function of anchoring the AV valves to ventricular papillary muscles are to anchor the AV valves to the papillary muscles of the ventricles and to keep the valves in a closed position whenever there is ventricular systole so that blood doesn’t flow back in the atria.
