Hint: A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, idea, emotion or feelings. There are many types of nouns such as common nouns, proper nouns, collective nouns, abstract nouns, count nouns etc. They can function as a subject, object, subject complement, object complement etc.

Complete answer:
A collective noun is a name for the team or family or group of people /things. There is a difference between a collective noun and the plural of a noun. A collective noun is a name for a group/collection of people or things. It is a singular word. For e.g. the collective noun of ‘fish’ will be ‘a school of fishes’. Whereas, the plural of the noun simply refers to ‘more than one’ of a particular noun for e.g. plural of ‘fish’ is ‘fishes’.

The collective noun for ‘monkeys’ will be a troop of monkeys. We can also use words such as Barrel, Carload, Cartload, Tribe in the place of ‘troop’. Troop means to walk or move together in large numbers. It is a common sight that monkeys walk in large numbers together, therefore, we use ‘a troop’ as the collective noun.

Similarly, tribe means community or family, barrel means a big wooden container, cartload means equivalent to the space of a cart, carload means equivalent to the space of a car. So here we are using the words that show a large number or a large space. Carload/cartload/ barrel of monkeys will imply a huge number of monkeys occupying a space equivalent to the space of a car/cart/barrel.

Note: Collective noun is usually accompanied by a singular verb and sometimes a plural verb but the plural of a noun always takes a plural verb. For e.g. A troop of monkeys has created ruckus in the verandah. E.g. of plural- Monkeys have created ruckus in the verandah.
