The Golden Quadrilateral Super Highway is a national network connecting the 4 major industrial and cultural cities of India, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. As connecting 4 dots forms a quadrilateral, likewise it is named. The main objective of this project was to create super highways for the reduction of distance and time on roadways travelling between the cities. This is the fifth longest highway in the world and the largest project of India.This project is managed by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under Ministry of Road, Highways and Transport.
The project has four sections. Section 1 is stretched from Delhi to Kolkata running through Haryana, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal collecting major state cities like Agra, Kanpur, Allahabad etc. It's 1454 km long.
Section 2 is 1684 km from Kolkata to Chennai. It consists of NH6 from Kolkata to Kharagpur, NH60 from Kharagpur to Balasore and NH5 from Balasore to Chennai passing through the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Section 3 is 1290km from Chennai to Mumbai passing through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
 The last Section 4 is 1419 km long stretches between Mumbai and Chennai. It contains NH 8 from Delhi to Kishangarh, NH 79A Ajmer bypass, NH 79 from Nasirabad to Chittorgarh and NH 76 from Chittorgarh to Udaipur passing through the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and New Delhi. The planning of the project was completed in 1999, started in 2001 and the project was completed in 2012. The estimated cost of investment is Rs. 308.58 Billion.

 The key point of constructing this huge project was the creation of an efficient road network for a country like India which is huge and to maintain its socio-economic development and national integration.
