Hint: Bacteria are termed as the microorganisms that occur in our environment. Some of them can lead to diseases in humans and some others don't. Based on the variations in their shapes, they are of several types.
Complete answer:
Bacteria are defined as the prokaryotic organisms and they constitute a primitive nucleus and other properties of a prokaryotic cell. Bacteria can be observed based on their morphological structure. They are known to exist in different shapes such as round, rod-shaped, comma-shaped, and spiral- shaped.
Spherical shaped bacteria are also termed as coccus. Two spherical cocci may be observed together and are termed as diplococci. In streptococci, many spherical shaped cocci are observed in a chain. Examples of cocci include streptococci, staphylococci, gonococci, meningococcal, etc. Neisseria meningitidis are also termed as meningococcal and Neisseria gonorrhoea is referred to as gonococci. Most cocci are gram-positive bacteria in nature But bacteria like Neisseria are gram-negative in nature.
Rod-shaped bacteria are also referred to as Bacilli. Most of the bacilli are observed to be gram-negative staining in nature. But gram-positive rods are also occurring like Cyanobacterium, Clostridium, Listeria, etc.
Comma shaped bacteria are also referred to as vibrium. Vibrio cholera is a comma shaped bacterium that leads to the disease cholera.
Spiral shaped bacteria are also referred to as spirilla. Examples for spirochetes include Treponema, Borellia, Leptospira, etc.
Note: There are many different bacteria that are seen in different shapes. These are also termed as pleomorphic bacteria. Rickettsia and Chlamydia are examples for pleomorphic bacteria.
