Hint: A long cylindrical coil of insulated copper wire of large number of circular turns is called Solenoid. When a current is passed through the solenoid, it produces a magnetic field around it. These field lines appear to diverge outside the solenoid coil and it works on the principle of electromagnetism.

A solenoid is a long coil wrapped in many turns. A solenoid works on the principle of electromagnetism. That is, when the solenoid coil receives an electric current, it creates a magnetic field. The magnetic field produced within a solenoid depends upon the density of turns and current. Direction of the magnetic field depends on the direction of the current. When current is passed through it, it creates a nearly uniform magnetic field along the axis or inside the solenoid. Outside the coil that is, at the ends, the magnetic field is small and field lines appear to diverge. This divergence occurs because the distance from the current carrying solenoid increases. The distance from a current carrying conductor and magnetic field are inversely related. That is, magnetic field strength decreases, as the distance increases. The direction of the current and magnetic field are determined by Right hand thumb rule. The solenoid converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy.

Note:
Solenoids are used in many automated applications today. They can be found in cars, air conditioning systems, industrial machinery, agricultural systems, locking mechanisms, medical equipment and even in simple household electronics.
