Hint: During chromatography the various colours that are present in black dye get separated from each other. The various colours are seen according to their affinity towards the mobile phase.

Complete Answer:
Chromatography is a technique which is used to separate the different components present in the mixture. There are two things included in a chromatography that are stationary phase and mobile phase. Stationary phase as the name suggests is standing and does not move. Mobile phase is the phase which moves over the stationary phase. The mobile phase contains the component along with itself. The one which has more affinity towards the mobile phase moves far that the other component. In paper chromatography the sheets of paper are used as the stationary phase and mobile phase varies according to the nature of substance we need to separate. It is a very inexpensive method to separate.
In the separation of various colours in black ink we use paper chromatography. The water is taken as the mobile phase. The diagram representing the chromatography is as follow:

As the water rises the various colours keep on separating along the way. This is due to the difference in solubility of colours in water. The more soluble the colour is in water the more far away it will go and the less soluble colours will separate nearby.

Note: There are various types of paper chromatography such as ascending paper chromatography, descending paper chromatography and radial paper chromatography. We have used the ascending paper chromatography.
