The split ring is made of copper and is split from the center into two parts. The brushes are connected around the outer diameter of the split ring. The main purpose of a split ring is to reverse the polarity of the current. When the shaft comes into contact with a split ring, the split ring reverses the direction of current to maintain the shaft torque in a magnetic field. Basically it is used for getting the pulsating input voltage.
Armature coil is the rotating component of a DC dynamo. It is a type of winding in which voltage is induced. The armature coil carries current so it is always made of metals having good conductivity.
Note: Like split ring there is another ring called slip ring. We should not be confused with that. A slip ring is very similar to a split ring but it is used in three phase ac motors. The purpose of the slip ring is to introduce resistance into the rotor circuit.
