Take note of the two readings you get from the two ends of the material you've taken. Subtract the greater reading from the lesser reading to get the object's true length.
Let's consider an example here. Let the ends of the ruler be taken as point X and point Y.Position the ruler next to the object to be measured. Measure the distance from point X to point Y. If the reading on the ruler at the end X is 1.0 cm, and the reading at the end Y is 4.3 cm, the rod XY's length is 4.3-1.0=3.3 cm.
