Hint : Cement Industry is one of the largest industries in India and in addition to it, occupies a prominent place as one of the basic industries for the development of a country’s infrastructure and generation of employment for the large workforce in India.

Complete answer :
In December 1916, the British opened a new cement plant at Lakheri in Rajasthan. In independent India, the ACC ltd. opened the first plant in Lakheri in 1951.
Prior to its partition, India had 24 factories. As India and Pakistan emerged, India inherited 19 factories, which claim an annual production of 2.1 million tons. Both the countries faced a crisis- Pakistan at the supply side and India on the demand side; the production fell to 2.1 million tons from 2.7 million tons. Thus, the partition had a serious impact on the cement industry.

Additional information:-
It is the wrong choice as the first cement factory in Rajasthan wasn’t put up in Chittorgarh. Here, the first plant was put up by Birla Cement Works after 1953.
Udaipur isn’t the right answer. The first cement plant in Udaipur was put up in the year around the 1990s.
The first cement plant of Rajasthan wasn’t put up in Bikaner therefore, this isn’t the right answer.

Option D, is the correct answer.

Note :In 1948, the Government of India adopted the Cement Expansion Scheme which sought to increase new factories to enhance production capacities. As a result, new factories were established at Bagalkot, Jaipur, Orissa, Travancore, etc. Apart from this, the cement industry was given a significant consideration in all the initial five year plans.
