In Harappan Civilization there was a well-planned urban city known as Mohenjodaro which is also the most distinctive feature of Harappan Civilization. In such urban cities there used to be two areas one of which is smaller but on much more height than the other one known as Citadel and the other used to be lower but larger than citadel. In the citadel there were structures which are used by the public for special purposes only. One of the important structures among them was the Great bath.

Some of the important features of the Great Bath were as follows:-

a) The Great bath was a large rectangular tank present in an area on flat ground delineated by the walls of the buildings from all sides.

b) There were two sets of steps one in the north and the other in the south that goes to the tank.

c) The tank was made in such a way that no water can come out made by use of mortar or gypsum and bricks.

d) Except on side all the other sides consist of rooms and one of these rooms used to have a large well. The water in the tank comes from these wells.

e) Once the water in the tank is used then it drains.

f) In the north direction there used to be a narrow path that led to a smaller building which consists of eight bathrooms equally divided on both sides of the path. These bathrooms are connected to a drain that ran with the narrow path.

g) According to the historians the Great Bath was meant for bath on special occasions to be used by the public.

The length and breadth of the tank is 11.88 x 7.01 metres.
The depth of the tank is 2.43 metres.
It is built up of fine brickwork.
