The small intestine is a highly coiled organ that is present in the abdomen. It is right after the stomach in the digestive system. The small intestine is the primary region where all of the digestion in the body takes place. This organ can be around 22 feet long on average.
The small intestine is responsible for absorbing most of the materials that have been broken down by the enzymes in the stomach. The intestine also releases digestive juices that further break down the food. This food gets directly absorbed into the blood. There are microvilli that are on the surface of the small intestine which increases the surface area of the intestine and allows it to absorb food more easily.
After this absorption is done, the rest of the food moves towards the large intestine where all of the water in the food gets absorbed. Then the remaining waste moves out of the body.
