It was started in 1952 in India when Manekhel Sankalchand Thacker, an engineer, started a project on exploring the wind energy possibilities in India. They started surveys on the wind velocities in different parts of India, technologies that can be used and other aspects. Then in 1986, wind farms were established in the coastal-areas like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and wind energy production started in India.
Tamil Nadu is the largest producer of wind energy in India. It produces almost 29% of the total energy produced by wind energy in India. India ranks in the list at fourth number with the production capacity of 35 GW.
