1. Indian weightlifter Karnam Malleswari holds the distinguished honour of being the first woman from India to win a medal at the Olympics.
2. Born in the hamlet of Voosavanipeta in Andhra Pradesh, Karnam Malleswari started her sports training at the age of 12.
3. Before long, success came calling. Karnam Malleswari placed third in the World Championships in 1993 and then followed up with consecutive 54kg world titles in 1994 and 1995, before bookending her run with another third-place effort in 1996.
4. The success built up momentum as she left for the Olympics in Sydney. Karnam Malleswari had mixed feelings though she did her country proud by winning a bronze. Due to a miscalculation inside the Indian camp, she thought she lost out on gold that meant that she had to lift more than she wanted for the top spot on the podium.
5. At the 2004 Olympics in Greece, she envisaged another comeback, but uninspiring results eventually made her call it a career.
