Let us explain the functions of ciliary muscles. They control the shape of the lens of our eyes. The ciliary muscles adjust the focal length of the lens by changing the configuration of the lens. The accommodation of the eye is defined as the process in which the ciliary muscles vary the focal length of our eyes, allowing the light rays from an object to fall on the retina and resulting in the creation of an image of the object. Hence, the power of accommodation is the power of our eyes to change its focal length. The power of accommodation changes depending on the distance of objects from our eyes.
When the objects are near to our eyes, ciliary muscles shrink and thicken the lens. It results in the lowering of the focal length of our eyes and we can see nearby objects. For objects far away from the eyes, the ciliary muscles expand and the size of the lens reduces. It results in an increase in the focal length and we can see far-away objects clearly.
The power of accommodation is around 4 dioptres for a person having normal vision. The power of accommodation of our eyes has a restricted value. Thus, the focal length of our eyes cannot be increased or decreased beyond a certain limit.
