Complete answer: The ‘Axis powers” were also known as "Rome–Berlin–Tokyo Axis". It was a military alliance that fought in World War II against what was known as “the Allies”. The Axis powers bonded on the sole reason, which was to oppose the Allies. However, they did not completely coordinate their activities. The “Axis” was the outcome of the diplomatic efforts of Germany, Italy, and Japan. In order to secure their specific expansionist interests, they signed a treaty in October 1936. This treaty between Germany and Italy was seen as the first step. On 1 November 1936, Benito Mussolini declared that all other European countries should take into consideration the Rome–Berlin axis. This created the term "Axis". The second step to this was the signing of the Anti-Comintern Pact, an anti-communist treaty between Germany and Japan, in November 1936. Italy joined the Pact in 1937. Followed by Italy, Hungary and Spain also joined the pact in 1939. In 1939 under "Pact of Steel", the "Rome–Berlin Axis" finally became a military alliance. However, it was with the Tripartite Pact of 1940 that led to the integration of the military interests of Germany, Italy and Japan.
