Hint- In order to deal with this question first we will understand production of phenol from all the possible compounds further then we will see the preparation of phenols from benzene sulphonic acid with reaction.
Complete step-by-step answer:
Haloarenes, benzene sulphonic acid, diazonium salts, cumene should be used to treat the phenols. Phenol is the chemical compound bonded to a hydroxyl group containing benzene rings. These are called carbolic acids too. These are weak acids, which usually form phenoxide ions by removing from the hydroxyl group one strong hydrogen ion.
Phenol had been mainly synthesized from coal tar in earlier days. Nowadays some modern techniques for the processing of phenols in laboratories have come up with developments in science. In labs, phenol is synthesized mainly from benzene derivatives.
Preparation of Phenols from Benzene Sulphonic Acid:
The benzene-sulphonic acid can be obtained by reacting with oleum from benzene. The benzenesulfonic acid thus formed is treated at high temperatures with molten sodium hydroxide which leads to sodium phenoxide formation. Finally, phenols are supplied by the sodium phenoxide on acidification.
Note- Phenols are commonly used as intermediates for chemical synthesis, in household products. For example, phenol itself is used as a disinfectant (in low concentrations) in household and mouthwash cleaners. Phenol was probably the first antiseptic surgery. Phenol is a very natural chemical and is used commonly in the following consumer products: air fresheners, aftershave, bronchial mist, chloraseptic throat spray, deodorants, feminine powders & sprays, hair spray, decongestants, mouthwash, aspirin, solvents, acne remedies, antiseptics, calamine lotions, washing.
