The Silent Valley National Park is at the heart of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and consists of areas of South Western Ghats rain forests and tropical wet evergreen jungle. River Kunthi which is locally referred as Kunthipuzha (puzha in Malayalam means river) passes through it.
The park is legendary for its unique and diverse wildlife and bird species.The major flora of the park are teak, rosewood together with bamboo and also the major fauna present here are highly endangered species like lion tailed macaque, tiger, wild boar, panther, Indian civet and sambhar. The river Kunthi and its tributaries harbor many forms of freshwater life. 12 species of fish have been identified out of which two are new to science.
