The salivary gland, more specifically the parotid glands produce serous saliva: a watery secretion that is rich in enzymes. The liquid that is in the form of Mucus saliva is secreted to the sublingual glands. It does not contain enzymes but only has a large amount of mucus in it. The saliva sacred by the parotid gland is watery saliva called serous saliva, it contains an enzyme called ptyalin which is rich in alpha-amylase. Through parotid ducts, entry of the gland occurs. There's a facial nerve that runs around the masseter muscle.
Apart from the parotid, there are two other salivary glands named, mandibular and sublingual glands. So, in total pigs have three salivary glands. The parotid gland is present at the base of the masseter muscle that is attached to the facial nerves. This helps in chewing food and mixing saliva. The mandibular glands are present where the small lymph nodes are found and are located beneath the parotid gland. The sublingual glands are long and narrow glands whose location can not be easily found.
The sublingual glands contribute only 3-5% of the overall saliva and the secretion is important
in initial digestion, lubrication of food, and keeping the oral mucosa moist.
