They are soft-billed, short-legged, and arboreal in habitat. They have greenish usually with yellow, red, and other brightly colored markings in their plumage.
-The Treroninae genus includes the heavyset Imperial pigeon (Dacula), the small and extremely colorful fruit doves(Ptilinopus), and the blue pigeon (Alectroenas).
The Gourinae-consists of three species found in New Guinea. They are blue-grey in colors with a fanlike head crest. They are also the largest of all the pigeons (the size of a turkey).
The Didunculus- comprises a single species i.e the tooth billed pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris). Found in Samoa. These are the fruit-eating terrestrial pigeons adapted to the arboreal habitat. Unlike most of the pigeons, it uses its feet to hold on its foot while pecking off pieces.
