Hint: Hepatic portal system is the venous system; the main vessel of this system is the hepatic portal vein. It is a large vein that lies alongside the hepatic artery. The liver has a branch of the hepatic artery, a branch of the hepatic portal vein, and a branch of the interlobular bile duct; all three are together known as portal triads present in the portal space or space of Moll.
Complete answer: The prime function of this system is to transport deoxygenated blood to the liver where it gets detoxified and then returns to the heart. Once the blood reaches the liver through the hepatic portal vein it proceeds the blood and there the process of detoxification occurs. A special vascular is present between the digestive tract and the liver which is called the hepatic portal system. The hepatic portal vein collects blood from the various parts of the digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas, and gallbladder), spleen and drains the blood to the liver before it is passed on to the systemic circulation.
This system is very essential because the nutrients, minerals, and drugs present in the intestinal blood are purified and detoxified into the liver.
Hence the correct option is (A).
Note: Hepatic portal vein plays a key role in the cleansing of the blood. The blood after being drained into the liver by the hepatic portal vein is filtered and made free of micro-organisms and toxins. After the food is absorbed by the intestine the hepatic portal vein takes up the blood before it reaches the heart for oxygenation.
