The axial skeleton is made up of 80 bones which are distributed along the main axis of the body. The skull, vertebral column, sternum and ribs together made the axial skeleton system. The skull comprises two sets of bones: the cranial and the facial bones. The cranial bones are 8 in number while the facial bones consist of 14 bones which form the front part of the skull. The vertebral column is the backbone or the spinal bones which are composed of 26 rings like bones called vertebrae. The sternum is the flat bone on the ventral midline of the thorax.
