The reaction of \[KMn{O_4}\] and HCl results in ………………………….
(A) Oxidation of \[Mn\]in \[KMn{O_4}\] and production of \[C{l_2}.\]
(B) Reduction of \[Mn{\text{ in KMn}}{{\text{O}}_4}\] and production of \[{H_2}\].
(C) Oxidation of \[Mn{\text{ in KMn}}{{\text{O}}_4}\] and production of \[{H_2}\].

Hint: Oxidation occurs when an atom, molecule, ion loses one or more electrons in a chemical reaction and reduction occurs when an atom, molecule, ion gain one or more electrons in a chemical reaction
Complete step by step answer:
The reaction of \[KMn{O_4}\] and $HCl$ gives the following products which are $KCl,\,MnC{l_2},\,{H_2}O,\,\,C{l_2}$.
When potassium permanganate reacts with HydroChloric acid, it gives the following products.
The reaction is shown as below.
$2KMnO_4 + 16HCl \rightarrow 2KCl + 2MnCl_2 + 8H_2O + 5Cl_2 \uparrow$
In the above reaction, redox reaction takes place because both oxidation and reduction reaction take place simultaneously. Chlorine has an oxidation state of -1 and when reaction takes place, its oxidation state changes from -1 to 0 and it gets oxidised. Whereas, the oxidation state of Mn changes from +7 to +2 that means Mn gets reduced.
Hence the correct option is (D).
Additional information: Potassium permanganate forms dark purple crystals which are isostructural with those of Potassium perchlorate. The salt is not very soluble in water. It has intense colour and weak temperature dependent paramagnetism. The green manganate ion is paramagnetic while the permanganate ion is diamagnetic. Potassium permanganate is a good oxidising agent in acidic, basic, or neutral medium.
Note:
Potassium permanganate is a powerful oxidizing agent and it does not react with Conc. HCl at high temperatures. Hydrochloric acid is a mild reducing agent and is oxidised to free chlorine, when it is heated with the potassium permanganate. Chlorine is greenish gas with pungent and suffocation odour. It is 2 – 5 times heavier than air. It can be liquefied easily into greenish yellow liquid which boils at 239 K and is soluble in water. Chlorine is used for bleaching wood pulp which is used in manufacturing paper and rayon.
