- The coastal strips flank the Peninsular plateau, one stretched along the Bay of Bengal in the East and the other along Arabian sea in the West.
- The western coastal strip that runs from south from Goa to the southernmost tip of India (Kanyakumari) is called the Malabar Coast. The small and shallow, saltwater lakes and lagoons or backwaters are the beauty of this area. These lagoons are connected to each other by canals.
