Through the active involvement of women themselves, the aim of the Women's Empowerment Year was to build large-scale awareness. This has been suggested by Govt. India is launching year-long activities to bring about a change in the atmosphere that will enable women and children, especially girls, to develop self-confidence and assertiveness.

The Government of India drafted a year-long programme recommending monthly themes for the 2001 celebration and also urged the State Governments to celebrate the year in an acceptable manner.

Since the "Women's Empowerment Year" was proclaimed in 2001, Peaceful Society has agreed to organise several monthly programmes in Goa to educate the women's community about their democratic rights and responsibilities, as well as the welfare schemes available to them.
