The two newspapers started by Raja Rammohan Roy were in two different languages i.e Sambad Kaumudi in Bengali meaning The moon of intelligence in the 19th century,and Mirat-Ul-Akbar in Persian meaning the mirror of news in1882.They focused on the abolition of sati pratha.Through his writings and activities,he supported the movement for free press in India.

Raja Rammohan Roy with his supporters and students petitioned before the government to ban sati.His Efforts were succeeded in 1829,when anti sati law was passed.He strongly campaigned against the caste system,untouchabilities,superstitions and use of intoxicants.He attacked child marriage,illiteracy of women,and the degarded state of widows.He also demanded the right of inheritance and property of women.
