 A tautonym is just the scientific name of a genus in which the form is the same for all sections of the name. The title of the genus is the first section of the name and the second section is related to in the International Code of Nomenclature for fungi, algae, and plants as the particular epithet and in the ICBN as the particular name.
Pinus larix L. is the oldest name for the European larch. Gustav Karl Wilhelm Hermann Karsten (1753), however, did not agree with the position of the genus in Pinus and planned in 1880 to transfer it to Larix. A tautonym was developed by his proposed name.

A familiar long-tailed rat in the stereotypical rat genus Rattus, and in subfamily Murinae, is the black rat, often recognized as the ship rat, or house rat. It originally developed on the subcontinent of India, and is now seen everywhere.
