Hint: The epiglottis is located above the larynx which is a flap-like structure and prevents the entry of food from the throat to the windpipe so that the person should not have difficulty breathing. As it prevents entry of food into the lungs. Epiglottis remain closed during the passage of food as it should protect the entry of food into the windpipe.
Complete answer:
While respiration it remained closed to prevent food entry to the lungs. Epiglottis only allow air or oxygen to enter into the larynx. The valves present in epiglottis maintain the division between air and food, thus preventing the mammals from choking.
It is made from cartilage and mucous membrane which helps in attachment and smooth passage of air. It is like a leaf structure connected to arytenoid cartilages which are folded by the larynx.
Mostly in mammals the lungs are located at the backbone towards both the sides of the heart. Lung function Is to- extract oxygen which comes via the nose to lungs and transfer it directly into the bloodstream and release carbon dioxide.
This is the gaseous exchange lung does every time when it extracts air from the atmosphere. Respiration is processed by different muscular systems in different species. In earlier dates, tetrapods have lungs which are air driven by pharyngeal muscles and buccal pumping. The same mechanism was also seen in amphibians too.
Note:
But in humans, the respiration muscle is a diaphragm. The lungs make an airflow with vocal sounds which also include human speech. The lungs weigh kilograms from which the right lobe is heavier. Lungs have parts like- alveoli, bronchioles, sacs and ducts. Lungs filled the air approximately kilometers. From which million are filled in alveoli. Each lung is wrapped within a sac called the pleural sac containing pleural fluid.
