Complete answer :
The Aral Sea is a land-locked sea located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It is basically an endorheic lake i.e. it retains water and does not allow it to flow out into other water bodies like a river or an ocean. In the 1960s it was the 4th largest lake in the world and ever since it has been reducing in size. By the end of the 20th century, the lake had reduced to 1/10 of its original size.
The Aral Sea also split into the North and South Aral Sea and the eastern and western basins of the lake. By 2009 the South Aral Sea dried into a thin strip of water. The eastern basin of the Aral Sea had completely dried up by the year 2014. This region is now called the Aralkum Desert.
Once it witnessed a thriving fishing industry. But with time and unfavourable environmental conditions, it is completely devastated, leading to unemployment and economic hardship in the region. Soon this region also got severely polluted making its condition even worse. The diminishing of the Aral is considered as one of Earth’s worst environmental disasters.
Additional information:
Option (A) Timor Sea: The Timor Sea is an arm of the Indian Ocean, lying southeast of the island of Timor, Indonesia, and northwest of Australia. As the Timor Sea has access to the Indian ocean, it is not a landlocked sea. Hence, the option is incorrect.
Option (C) Red Sea: The Red Sea is connected to the Indian Ocean by way of the shallow and narrow sill of Bab-el-Mandeb (137 m deep and 29 km wide) and the Gulf of Aden. The Red Sea is also connected to the Indian Ocean, hence it is again an incorrect option.
Option (D) North Sea: The North Sea is a shallow, northeastern arm of the Atlantic Ocean and is located between the British Isles and the mainland of northwestern Europe. The North Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, so this option is also incorrect.
Option B,is the correct answer.
Note :
Between Asia and Europe (European Russia), a landlocked sea known as the Caspian Sea or Mazandaran Sea is located.
It is the largest inland body of water in the world, with a surface area of 371,000 km² (143,000 sq. mi.), and therefore shares common characteristics to both sea and lake.
It is often listed as the world's largest lake, though it is not a freshwater one.
