First, we will discuss the nitrogen cycle and its purpose. We know that nitrogen is the most plentiful element in our earth’s atmosphere. It is considered the basic constituent of matter. Now we will start discussing the stages of the nitrogen cycle and then we will predict which natural process plays an important role in it. So generally there are five stages or steps in the nitrogen cycle. The first step of the nitrogen cycle is nitrogen fixation. In this process, elemental nitrogen is converted to ammonia without using any chemical processes. The reaction is $ {N_2} \to N{H_3} $ . The second stage is nitrification in this step ammonia is converted to nitrate $ N{O^{3 - }} $ . The third stage is Assimilation in which nitrogen and ammonia are incorporated so that animals can utilize it. The fourth stage is ammonification and the last step is denitrification. At last, we obtained the gaseous nitrogen, and then again the same cycle repeats.
The first step of the nitrogen cycle is also known as atmospheric nitrogen fixation and this takes place only when the electrical discharge of lightning combines oxygen and nitrogen present in our atmosphere.
