There were disputes between social and religious reformers and the Hindu Orthodoxy over topics such as widow immolation, Brahmanic priesthood, monotheism and idolatry in the early 19th century. Tracts and newspapers proliferated in Bengal as the controversy grew, spreading a range of claims.
