Vedas are religious texts written in the form of a collection of poems distributed on four different books. They were supposedly written and followed by the migrants of the Indo-European movement occurred in the 2nd century BCE -who were living in the north east parts of modern India. They were written in Sanskrit.
There are four Vedas present. The Rig Veda was the first one written and it contained hymns and chants regarding the mythology. The Sama Veda, which came second contained all the hymns in regards of the rituals that were followed. Yajur Veda was the text which contained the structures and rules of following the religion and the last one, the Atharva Veda consists of spells that can be used against the enemies or in sorcery or to cure diseases.
The Rig Veda is the largest one of the four and it has 1028 hymns that are divided into 10 separated books called mandalas. Sam Veda is structured as a sub part of the Rig Veda, but differently arranged in order to be chanted. The Yajur Veda consisted of a White half and a Black half which contained instructions in order for the religion and the sacrifices surrounding it can be performed. The Atharva Veda became more story-like due to its extreme surreal contents which includes charms and magic incantations written in the style of folklore.
