The biodegradable waste produced in houses include peels of vegetables and different fruits, left over foods, fallen leaves, etc.

The foul odour arising from the garbage is due to the degradation of biodegradable material present in them.
Decomposers act on these degradable sources present in the garbage and decompose them, and hence act as a cleansing agent in nature. Decomposers or saprophytes release some degrading enzymes which convert the organic matter present in dead plants and animals into simple inorganic matter, some of which are used by them for their nutrition and the rest are released into the soil, water and air to be used by producers again. They help in mineral recycling in the ecosystem.
