Functions – Chapter 2, Mathematics (Class 12)

‘Functions’ is the 2nd Chapter of Mathematics in class 12. Students will learn about functions and can study the NCERT book to understand the concepts in a simple way. A function in simple words can be defined as a special relationship among the inputs (i.e. the domain) and their outputs (called the codomain) where each input has exactly one output and the output can be traced back to its input. An illustration of a simple function is f(x) = x2. In this function, the function f(x) takes the value of “x” and then squares it. For instance, if x = 2, then f (2) = 4.

In addition, functions can be defined in algebraic expressions as well. It can be defined as an equation for which any x that can be put into the equation will produce exactly one output (y) from the equation. It is represented as:  y = f (x)

Where x is an independent variable and y is a dependent variable i.e. it depends on the value of x.

FAQs on Quick Doubt Resolution with RD Sharma Class 12 Solutions Chapter 2 - Functions Exercise 2.2 - Free PDF

1. What's a function in a graph?

A function f (x) can be represented on a graph by knowing the values ofx. Functions can be represented by the equation, y = f (x), so if you start putting the values of x, you can get the value for y. Let us see an illustration

Suppose, y = x + 2

So,

If x = 0, y = 2

If x = -2, y = -2 + 2 =0

If x = -1, y = -1 + 2 = 1

If x = 1, y = 1 + 2 = 3

If x = 2, y = 2 + 2 = 4

Now with the help of these values of x and y, you can plot the graph for function x + 2.

2. What's a polynomial function?

A polynomial function is defined by y =a+ a1x + a2x2 + … + anxn, where n is a non-negative integer and a0, a1, a2… ∈ R. R is the set of real numbers. The highest power in the expression can be defined as the degree of the polynomial function. Polynomial functions are further classified based on their degrees:

  • Constant Function: When the highest degree is zero.

  • Linear Function: The polynomial function with degree one. The domain and the range are R i.e. the set of real numbers. Here, the graph is always a straight line.

  • Quadratic Function: If the degree of the polynomial function is two, then it is a quadratic function. It is expressed as f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, where a ≠ 0 and a, b, c are constant & x is a variable. The domain and the range are R.

  •  Cubic Function: A cubic polynomial function is a polynomial of degree three and can be denoted by f(x) = ax3 + bx2 + cx +d, where a ≠ 0 and a, b, c, and d are constant & x is a variable. The domain and the range are R.
